MELO PROJECT RUNWAY FOR THE YOUTH
MELO PROJECT RUNWAY FOR THE YOUTH
A unique method of mastering sewing is taught in the first two classes. Tina developed a way to teach sewing by using different shapes found in any garment. Students begin utilizing their left-right brain while learning to sew these shapes, as well as Tina's way to pin, cut, and measure.
Students learn the History of Fashion, and learn industry standard terms for basic silhouettes, necklines, and sleeves. Learn to do technical sketches of several necklines.
Students learn to measure a body, work with spec sheets (tech-packs), and build on Industry stand terms. Learning the difference between woven and knits.
This is an ongoing curriculum as students continue to learn even after 6 years with the Melo Project Runway For The Youth!
Students learn how designers in the fashion industry work with trend forecasting services and trend boards. Students have the "freedom of choice" from several trend boards to start working on their first design. They learn about color, style, fabrics and trims.
Students begin their first technical sketch and completed spec sheet at the same time learning how to measure using fractions and understanding inches. Math skills are greatly improved with each and every design.
Students learn this "one of kind" method to pattern-making with their first draft. Tina developed a way to create patterns, so that even a 5 year old was capable of such an amazing feat. Students learn to use rulers, hip french, and hem curves. Hand -eye coordination is greatly improved.
Tina's method to creating their first draft begins.
Students learn to separate each piece of their draft and add the necessary seam allowance.
A student may choose a design which may lean towards draping the fabric, to create the shape of a collar or silhouette.
The first pattern is cut, pinned and or sewn using a similar cheaper fabric in order to make sure their first pattern is correct. They learn to problem solve and make the necessary adjustments and corrections themselves. Building our youth's self-confidence and self-esteem is our priority.
With each design students learn a new technique, a new ability, an ever-growing awareness to mastering one of the top three basic life skills. Self motivating, self-governing, self-expression and self-worth grows tremendously throughout this process and for each design there after.
